Video analysis: Hominick technically misses weight, will Aldo raise a stink if he loses?

The weigh-in for UFC 129 was certainly one to remember. For first time, to my recollection, a local commission official actually complained that the music playing in the arena was too loud.

Someone named "Rocky" (wouldn't give his last name) voice his displeasure on several occasions, including when Mark Hominick stepped on the scale.

The Canadian, who's challenging Jose Aldo for his UFC featherweight title, weighed in at 145.25.

By rules, he missed weight for a title fight. You have to be at the designated weight or below. There is no one-pound allowance for title fights.

Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole checked in from Toronto. He was outraged with the way the Ontario Commission and the official, Rocky, handled the situation.

If Aldo storms to a victory, it probably won't matter. But because of Rocky's error, the door is slightly open for some potential postfight controversy.

Yahoo! Sports' Dave Meltzer also had concerns.

You can watch UFC 129 on PPV (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) right here on Yahoo! Sports.

Middleweights Maiquel Falcao and Tom Lawlor agree to UFC 134 matchup in Brazil

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_902.jpg
A middleweight bout is in the works between Maiquel Falcao and "Filthy" Tom Lawlor for this summer's UFC 134 event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as both fighters have verbally agreed to the fight according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

Falcao fights for just the second time in the UFC, his first fight since defeating Gerald Harris at UFC 123 in November. With a record of 26-3 with one no contest, Falcao will take part in his 30th fight in his home country on this card.

Lawlor returns for the first time since the fall as well. After back to back losses in 2010 had him at risk of being cut by the organization, Lawlor defeated former title challenger Patrick Cote at UFC 121 last October to move to 3-2 inside the Octagon.

UFC 134 takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27, headlined by a Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a good fight. Falcao didn't make the best first impression with the UFC, choosing to play a tentative and safe circling game against Harris in the second and third rounds of their fight and winning a decision. Things may have been different had the timekeeper done their job in the first round, as he locked on a late submission attempt and looked to have it secured, but the horn was sounded a full seven seconds early, allowing Harris to escape. But he's known as a violent finisher, and 21 of his 26 wins have ended by T(KO), so Lawlor will need to be wary of that coming in. Lawlor has a good wrestling and grappling game, however, and some decent striking as well, so he'll be a formidable challenge for Falcao.

Gegard Mousasi, Keith Jardine Draw in Bloody Strikeforce Fight

by Michael David SmithAs almost everyone expected, Gegard Mousasi bloodied and battered Keith Jardine on Saturday night's Strikeforce card. But as almost no one expected, Jardine showed a tremendous amount of toughness, Mousasi had a point deducted for an illegal kick, and the result was a majority draw.

It was a mess of a fight, with Jardine's face becoming a bloody mess and the referee calling a halt to the action three separate times: Once for an illegal kick, once for a low blow and once because Mousasi's mouthpiece fell out. One judge scored the fight 29-27 for Mousasi, but two judges scored it a 28-28 tie.

Dana White plans on meeting with Nick Diaz after UFC 129 to discuss MMA future and boxing

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WhiteDana_WK150_129.jpg
Earlier this month Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz went on a rant about not seeing a future for himself in the sport and his feeling that he's not paid enough for what he's doing in the sport. In addition, his head trainer and manager Cesar Gracie let it be known that they were looking to have Diaz's next fight be in boxing in 2011.

UFC President Dana White said on Wednesday he plans on meeting with Diaz after this weekend's UFC 129 event in Toronto to discuss the contentious welterweight's next move.

"What I'm going to do is I'm going to sit down Nick," White said. "I like the Diaz brothers. I'm going to sit down with him and figure out what he wants to do."

"I'm going to sit down with Nick Diaz, literally, after this fight and try to figure out what's next for him."

White confirmed that Diaz is within his contractual rights to take a fight in boxing, saying matter-of-factly, "It's in his deal that he can do it, absolutely."

White's goal is to figure out what Diaz is attempting to gain with the talk of moving to boxing, and wants to figure out a way to make things work with the often hot-headed and erratic Strikeforce Champ. With him being in Toronto this weekend in support of his brother Nate, who fights on Saturday's card, White's hoping to get things taken care of in short order.

"For the last 10 years, I've dealt with the craziest, the cruelest, the baddest, the this, the that, and I've always tried to make everybody happy," said White. "You can't make them all happy, but you can try."

Penick's Analysis: I think this is all going to depend upon how important Diaz winds up being in the UFC's eyes. If they feel they really want him to be in either the Strikeforce cage or inside the Octagon, they'll make a few concessions for him and find a way to make him happier than he is in order to get him back in the cage. If they feel he's being unreasonable or becomes too much of a hassle to deal with than they won't make those same concessions and it will be a different situation entirely. There's no way to know how things will work out when they do talk, if it even actually does happen this weekend, but hopefully a few weeks removed from his last fight Diaz will be in a better state of mind about the whole situation. Fans just want to see him fight, and they want to see him fight in the arena in which he's wowed them many times over. That's not the boxing ring.

Video analysis: Iole and Cofield talk Diaz being next for GSP

With few quality welterweights dotting the Strikeforce roster, how willing is Zuffa to allow Nick Diaz to fight lesser names in its smaller organization? The Strikeforce 170-pound champ won his 10th straight fight against Paul Daley on Saturday, so who's next?

Diaz has the well-rounded game to give UFC champ Georges St. Pierre a real run for his money. If GSP gets by Jake Shields at UFC, will the UFC quickly abandon the "business as usual" mantra that it pitched when it purchased Strikeforce and throw Diaz at the French-Canadian?

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to discuss Diaz's immediate future and the win over Daley.

Crime victim uses submission hold, alleged burglar dies from injuries

Martial arts choke holds are no joke. We've talked about that repeatedly after watching television and radio hosts asking MMA fighters to slap on the holds for a photo opportunity. The rear-naked or guillotine choke is a potentially lethal move if not treated with care. Just ask Alex Montalvo, who's in the center of a firestorm in New Jersey.

Back in July of 2010, Montalvo fought off a burglar, slapped on a submission hold and left Douglas Uhler unconscious on the street. Uhler never fully recovered and died yesterday at 19 years old.

On July 31 at 3:39 a.m. in Bridgewater, N.J., Montalvo and his wife heard their car alarm go off. The 42-year-old ran to the street, identified two suspects and chased them to the next block.

With one punch, he knocked out Brian Johnston, 18. That's when Uhler emerged:

Uhler ran out from nearby bushes and shouted: "You want a piece of me, (expletive)?!"

Uhler jumped on Montalvo, who put him in a submission hold, Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano said. The move blocked the teen's oxygen flow, causing a brain injury, Soriano said.

Uhler was taken to Somerset Medical Center and later treated at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center. He never fully recovered from the injuries:

A once-strapping high school football player, Uhler spent his days in bed or in a wheelchair. He had to be fed through a tube, according to court records. He was non-vocal and unable to walk, sit or roll. He also had poor head control. Uhler had been in and out of several hospitals, including the Children's Specialized Hospital and the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation.

Back in December, a grand jury indicted Uhler and Johnston on third-degree burglary charges. Johnson pleaded guilty and is awaiting charges. The Uhler family wants Montalvo in a courtroom next, claiming he used excessive force to subdue their son.

"New Jersey law allows you to defend your physical self as well as your property," said Jenny Carroll, an associate professor at Seton Hall Law School. "You're allowed to kill people under certain circumstances, particularly self-defense. If I jump on you, you're allowed to do what is required to make me stop hurting you. But if I pause, you can't just start kicking me in the head."

Carroll said there are no clear-cut answers.

"Here's the trick in this case ? did the homeowner exceed the need to protect his property?" she said. "If the kids are still in the process of taking the homeowner's property, then he has a right to defend his property and to use force. The prosecutor must decide whether the homeowner used justifiable force, and whether it was reasonable.

"Even in the heat of passion, if you're trying to subdue someone, it isn't reasonable to kill them," Carroll said.

The response to the story on NJ.com has been heated.

PrivateCitizen:

Self Defense means you are in imminent danger. This man chased these teens down. They were running FROM him. This man needs to go to prison. He is not the hero vigilante some people here think he is!

The attempted theft did not directly lead to the confrontation, his chasing them down did. Any 12 men or women will know that difference.

drock:

So is it wrong to defend one's property? What if this kid got passed out in the sleeper hold and then later recovered and didn't die? The act of putting one in a sleeper hold that you find robbing your car in the middle of the night doesn't exactly seem punishable to me.......you can't punish based on result or consequence but should punish based on action. In my opinion he didnt' do anything wrong and most people would chase down any if they caught them red handed too.

Some commenters even pointed to the rise of MMA as a reason for this tragedy.

mgm8822:

With the new popularity of MMA, every punk who has taken a martial arts class and learned how to throw a punch or put someone in a choke hold thinks they have the right to kick anyone's ass for any reason. We have a lot of unstable people walking around nowadays who are trained in the use of lethal force.

The Uhler family said their son had plans of attending William Patterson University, where he was looking to study sports medicine.

MMA skills used to fight crime took center stage in the last few months when UFC champion Jon Jones and his trainers subdued a burglar in Paterson, N.J. in late March. In mid-February, MMA fan Joe Lozito helped police catch an alleged serial stabber on a New York City Subway.

Bellator Books Top Prospect Tony Johnson vs. Carlos Flores

by Michael David SmithWhether the Bellator Fighting Championships can carve out a niche for itself and survive in the UFC-dominated world of American mixed martial arts is an open question. But there's no question at all that Bellator continues to sign talented fighters.

Heavyweight Tony Johnson is the latest acquisition to demonstrate just how good Bellator is at attracting top fighters: Bellator formally announced Thursday that Johnson has signed, and that he'll fight the 4-0 Carlos Flores at Bellator 41 on April 16.

"Tony is a fighter we have had our eye on for quite some time," Bellator boss Bjorn Rebney said. "He's one of the top heavyweight prospects in the world right now, and will make a great addition to our already impressive heavyweight lineup."

Former NHL enforcer is trying MMA in June

On skates, Donald Brashear could always fight with the best of them.

Can he do it bare-footed and against trained professional fighters? Brashear wants to find out.

According to the Canadian Press, the former NHL henchman, who's still playing hockey in the minors, has signed a deal with Ringside MMA to fight in June in Quebec City.

"Despite Brashear's lack of experience in MMA, he's a very athletic guy, he's in good shape, he's gutsy, he's learning pretty fast and showed an early interest and motivation," a Ringside MMA spokeswoman said. "Plus, he's no stranger to fighting."

Keep in mind, Brashear is also 39 years old. The 6-foot-3, 237-pounder will have to get approval from local authories before he steps into the cage.

Brashear may want to look at MMA sparring videos with another former NHL player George Laraque. Sure he was facing one of the best in the world, but Laraque was schooled a few months ago by Georges St-Pierre.

We're guessing the biggest test for Brashear will be conditioning and avoiding the potential adrenaline dump that happens in fighting. Baltimore Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski, who's crossed over to professional boxing, said fighting is unlike any conventional sport.

"You have to control it in boxing, because in football maybe that first series you get real excited. The warm up in boxing is far, far more important than in football," Zbikowski told ESPN1100 in Las Vegas.

During his 17-year career, Brashear piled up 2,634 penalty minutes in 1,025 NHL games.

Video analysis: Diaz or Daley? Who will be with UFC in 2012?

With some of their behavior in and out of the cage, they've both painted themselves into a corner . But in the end, it's their chops that probably landed both Nick Diaz and Paul Daley in a position where the UFC told them to go bye-bye. In a strange twist, both will be collecting a check tomorrow night from Zuffa, their old boss, as they square in the main event of Strikeforce in San Diego (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT).

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to talk about the sins of the past and what mistakes may turn out to be most easily forgiven.

Who has a better shot at securing a long future with the UFC - Daley or Diaz? Or maybe the answer is neither and they might be just fine with that.

Bellator 42 Predictions

Filed under:

For the second consecutive Saturday night, Bellator has the mixed martial arts spotlight to itself, as Bellator 42 is the weekend's only major MMA card. The big question facing Bellator is whether the match-ups they've put together will result in the kind of exciting card that will get fans buzzing, and create a little momentum for the promotion heading into the home stretch of its fourth season.

Bellator 42 took a hit when Paul Buentello suffered an injury and had to pull out of his fight with Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad, so whatever attention this card can garner will come from the semifinals of the light heavyweight tournament, and the promotional debut of Ronnie Mann.

Here are the basics on Saturday night's card:

What: Bellator 42

Where: Lucky Star Casino, Concho, Oklahoma

When: Saturday, the MTV2 broadcast starts at 9 PM ET.

Predictions on the three main card fights below.

ROUNDTABLE: Reactions to Zuffa's plans on moving Strikeforce to pay-per-view in July - Hansen, Amadi, Carter, Pelkey and Penick

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_144.png
What are your thoughts on Zuffa moving Strikeforce to pay-per-view in July?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Well, if the pay-per-view market isn't saturated already, we're about to see if adding Strikeforce pay-per-views will meet the saturation point. Pretty soon most hardcore fans are going to pick and choose which events they want to see, and once that happens it'll be difficult to get those people to start buying all pay-per-views again.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Because Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez just fought this month, July would probably be too quick of a turnaround for them, so title fights might be out of the question. So we're probably looking at a card headlined by Dan Henderson taking on Fedor Emelianenko. That is a fight that will titillate hardcore fans, but it doesn't have nearly the luster it would have had Fedor not been handled so decisively in his last outing.

The real point of interest is whether or not this event hurts the first UFC pay-per-view headlined by bantamweights.

ALVIN CARTER, MMATORCH SPECIALIST

Strikeforce was going to give this a try at some point. This could be a good move in trying to signal that the Strikeforce product is on par with UFC's. This could work well if Strikeforce does end up running separately, and even better if they are swallowed completely into the UFC brand. By uplifting Strikeforce's brand the eventall unification bout wills be a bit more sellable, and the former Strikeforce fighters will gain some credibility to newer fans who hear that "Gibert Melendez was the former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion." The effect would be similar to hearing that a fighter was in Pride.

MATT PELKEY, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I think a co-promoted pay-per-view with M-1 and Strikeforce is in Fedor's somewhat recently signed contract. I doubt Zuffa really cares what kind of buyrate this potential pay-per-view does. They're more concerned with checking it off of their "to-do" list and being one step closer to fulfilling all of their obligations to Strikeforce contracted fighters.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

My thinking's along the lines of Matt's, where it's quite possible that Emelianenko's got a contractually obligated pay-per-view fight, and a bout with Dan Henderson makes sense to put on pay-per-view. With the next two heavyweight grand prix fights taking place a month before, and Nick Diaz looking to strong-arm things with his threats of leaving for boxing, Gilbert Melendez might be the only champion on the Strikeforce banner available to defend his title, which could work for a pay-per-view card. It's not an event that is going to do big money, at all, especially when Fedor has lost two straight and is the likely headliner. He's never drawn more than 100,000 on pay-per-view (or 150K, depending on which numbers you go by for the Affliction shows), and this would do that type of number at a maximum. The plan is probably just to test the waters and see what kind of response they get, and then move forward with the next phase of whatever they've got planned for Strikeforce as a brand. Basically, I don't think we'll be seeing multiple Strikeforce pay-per-views in the near future.

Should the UFC allow Tito Ortiz to drive racecars?

One can only imagine Dana White's reaction when he heard Tito Ortiz wrecked his car. The good news is that Tito came away unscathed and it was a race car he was driving during a practice run for a celebrity event. But it's begs the question - why is one of the most injury-prone guys in MMA putting himself at risk?

TMZ posted the photo of Tito's trashed Toyota Scion. The gossip website claims Ortiz wrecked the car twice during a Tuesday practice run for the "Fueled by Fame" Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race on Apr. 16.

Ortiz, who has a history of neck and back problems, already bailed on a 2011 fight against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at Ultimate Fight Night 24. He's scheduled to face Ryan Bader in July at UFC 132.

If Tito goes through with the race it is for a good cause.

On behalf of each celebrity racer, Toyota donates $5,000 to Racing for Kids every year and another $5,000 to the winning racer's charity of choice. Racing for Kids, a national nonprofit program benefiting children's hospitals throughout the country, (in this case, Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach and Children's Hospital in Orange County, Calif.), was created as a way to connect sick children with their favorite celebrities and race-car drivers. Toyota has donated more than $1.9 million to various children's hospitals since 1991, on behalf of this race and its participants.

Additionally, a $15,000 donation will be made in conjunction with the 14th-annual "People Pole Award." Sponsored by People magazine, the award honors the pole-position winner of the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race qualifying session on Friday, April 15.

Other celebrities racing include Anthony Anderson, Jillian Barberie Reynolds, Tyson Beckford, Kevin Eubanks, Dennis Haysbert, Megyn Price and Kimora Lee Simmons. The race takes place on the downtown streets of Long Beach, Ca. Insert your Quinton Jackson joke here.

Hominick will pimp CFL team at UFC 129

Canada sounds like it's stoked for UFC 129 and all its countrymen on the card next week in Toronto. Mark Hominick, a Thamesford-native is representing all of Ontario, he'll also be pushing the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats. From Yahoo!'s CFL blog:

Hominick will wear a Tiger-Cats' hat as he enters the octagon; his shorts will also feature a Tiger-Cats' logo and an ad for Ticats.ca. The team's also running a contest which includes tickets to UFC 129 as a prize (along with plenty of other impressive stuff), and Hominick will also be featured at "MMA Night" at Ivor Wynne Stadium, which will take place July 16 when the Tiger-Cats host the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Andrew Bucholtz from 55-yard line says the CFL is capitalizing on something other major leagues are whiffing on:

MMA fans are also an excellent demographic for the Tiger-Cats to reach out to. The MMA fan base includes a lot of people in their 20s and 30s (partly because the sport's rise to prominence is still relatively recent), and that's a group the CFL would do well to try and draw. The CFL audience used to skew a lot older; I think that's starting to change, but there's still a need to bring in new, young fans, and a partnership with a prominent Canadian MMA fighter's an excellent way to at least increase the visibility of the Tiger-Cats' brand. From an image perspective, it's also a good thing for a CFL team to position itself as on the side of MMA; many established sports leagues and brands have somewhat turned up their noses at the UFC, and that's probably not a smart long-term strategy given the sport's rapidly growing popularity.

We're glad to see Ontario is welcoming MMA with open arms. Now it's time to work on its acceptance of the Lingerie Football League.

Pregnant woman wins fight, but now out of the mix for Carano match

Female fighters bring some unique differences to the table versus their male counterparts. They face different challenges when cutting weight, but that's nothing compared to the reason Cindy Dandois just dropped out of the mix for a June fight against Strikeforce star Gina Carano.

Dandois is three months pregnant, and fought in mid-March, when she was just over two months into her pregnancy. She beat Jorina Baars on a fight card in Belgium. Dandois confirmed to Cagewriter that she is pregnant and was for her last fight, but didn't know it at the time.

"Idid tests before because my weight was more difficult to reach, but they were all negative so I didn't realize it," Dandois said in an email to Cagewriter. She even took a test at a hospital before getting an X-ray, and that came up negative.

This all begs the question -- do all state commissions that control fights need to start administering a pregnancy test along with tests for PEDs before females step into the cage? Nevada State Athletic Commission does require pregnancy testing, though that would not have changed anything for Dandois as her pregnancy tests came up negative.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker discussed the pregnancy news and said a new opponent will be found shortly for Carano. Carano will return to fighting after 21-plus months off while busy with a movie career. Dandois said that she hopes to return to fighting shape soon after the birth of her child.

"If I wasn't pregnant I would've agreed for this fight because it was and is still my biggest dream to fight her one time," Dandois said. "I hope Strikeforce still wants me and asks me after my pregnancy. If I can sign with them Iwill start training again right away so I can be ready to take any fight in about 2-3 months after my baby is born, and my family will be thereto support me."

Though it's causing a hiccup in her fighting career, Dandois is grateful for the pregnancy.

"God gave me this child present. Who am I for not being thankful for it. Some women have to move earth and fire to get a child and I got blessed like this, having already two beautiful kids. I guess fighting I can still do after I got my baby, but my children are for the rest of my life!!"

Tickets on sale this week for UFC on Versus 4 at Pittsburgh's Consol Energy Center

The UFC's first ever trip to Pittsburgh, Penn. comes this June, as UFC on Versus 4 takes place from the Consol Energy Center on June 26.

The UFC on Tuesday announced the event, along with the top three fights for the card, and tickets will go on sale this week for the event.

Headlined by the welterweight debut of Nate "The Great" Marquardt in a bout with Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, the card will also feature heavyweight bouts in Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo and Christian Morecraft vs. Matt Mitrione.

"Nate Marquardt is an incredible athlete and his size and strength could make him a force in the UFC welterweight division," UFC President Dana White said in Tuesday's release. "He's not getting an easy fight for his first time at 170 pounds though. 'Rumble' has knockout power and great wrestling, and will make a huge statement if he beats Nate.

"I really love the Barry-Kongo fight," White continued. "Both of these guys love to stand and trade and both come from kickboxing backgrounds. I expect it to be a war in that fight."

Tickets for the card range from $50.00 to $250.00, and go on sale to the general public this Saturday, April 23. UFC Fight Club members get their first crack at tickets this Thursday, April 21, while UFC newsletter subscribers will have a presale on Friday, April 22.

Heavy on organization and rules, Ontario’s first MMA show deemed a success

The sport had to jump through plenty of hoops to get approval in Ontario, so it was good to hear the first MMA show in the Canadian province was run professionally. Trainers, fighters and media members in attendance said Saturday's "MMA: Day of Reckoning" at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, came off as a big-time show.

The main event featured former UFC fighter Josh Burkman. He gave props to the promoters and regulators.

"They were strict but they weren't overbearing by any means," Burkman told Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press. "They just make sure that the show's ran right and the fighters are taken care of. And I have no problems with the way they do the testing and the physicals and the bloodwork. As a fighter, you want those things to be lined up the proper way so fighters are healthy and taken care off."

Misha Cirkunov, who also fought on the card, said it was clear that Ontario is going to ensure only qualified fighters step into the cage on their watch.

"It's very organized, it's very nicely done, it's very fair. But at the same time, it's not that easy to just be a fighter in Ontario. There are certain things you have to go through… . I've fought in many provinces before and it was much easier to go through all the medicals, all the tests, and all of that," said Cirkunov.

The commission also went the extra mile by bringing some of the more established referees in the industry. "Big" John McCarthy also thought the event came off as first-rate.

"It's time for MMA here and it's great that the Ontario Athletics Commission is now going to be running the events, sanctioning everything and showing everybody what MMA is really all about," McCarthy said. "It really doesn't matter what promotion it is or anything like that. It's about putting the right fighters together that put on great fights and I think in those two (main and co-main event) fights alone, you're going to see what MMA is all about."

Referees Yves Lavigne and Dan Miragliotta also worked the event.

Burkman lost his fight to 21-year-old Jordan Mein. Burkman is now 3-1 since being cut by the UFC. He was a cast member on "The Ultimate Fighter 2." Another UFC vet Chris Horodecki was victorious over David Castillo.

Davidson reported the show sold out with 5,000 squeezing into the casino's concert auditorium. The promoter Robert Waterman recently changed his focus from boxing to MMA. He saw immediate gains. His recent boxing shows at Casino Rama were only drawing 3,000.

SportsNet.ca did play-by-play for all the fights.

UFC's Chael Sonnen sentenced to two years probation, fined $10,000 in guilty plea to money laundering charges

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SonnenChael_150_21.png
Chael Sonnen was sentenced on Friday for his guilty plea in a money laundering case in the state of Oregon.

Mike Chiappetta at MMAFighting.com reports that Sonnen was sentenced to 24 months of probation and handed a $10,000 fine from his January 3 guilty plea. In addition, Sonnen forfeited his real estate license. His sentencing was handed down by Judge Michael W. Mosman in Portland, Ore.

Sonnen admitted to being a party in a fraudulent transaction involving the sale of a home in Oregon in 2006, and with his guilty plea the prosecution recommended the sentence he was handed down on Friday.

This incident was simply another in a series of issues Sonnen needed to deal with in the last year, beginning with failing a steroid test at UFC 117 last summer. After getting his suspension reduced in December to six months in a hearing with the California State Athletic Commission, this money laundering case came to light and led to Sonnen and the UFC mutually agreeing to freeze his contract.

Now that this sentence has been handed down, Sonnen and the UFC will work towards getting him back into the cage. However, he'll need to get licensed by a commission before his return, and that may not be an easy process.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Because he admitted to steroid use for what he has claimed is a legitimate need for testosterone replacement therapy, he's now going to need to prove that to the commissions in order to get approval for the treatment. That is the next step, and if he is not approved for the treatment by the commissions and pops for use again, then he'd be in a whole different level of trouble with the commissions. Regardless of his claims of necessity, Sonnen never went through the proper channels to make his claims legitimate in the eyes of the commission. The fact that the CSAC reduced his suspension is not vindication for Sonnen on this issue, like many still unfortunately believe. He succeeded in muddying the issue enough and causing enough confusion with commission members at the end of a long meeting to get them to make a rash reduction in his sentence despite providing zero evidence that he properly disclosed or had cleared the treatment he claimed was necessary. That's what he's still got to answer for, and that, along with flat out lying about similar approval from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, is what could complicate things going forward.

The ‘Pitbulls’ offer another awesome finish at Bellator 41

In a highlight that should bring a smile to some fans' faces, Patricio "Pitbull" Freire scored another devastating finish for the "Pitbull" Brothers. See, the UFC doesn't have every good fighter in the world under contract ... yet. The smaller of the two dynamos, took out a high level featherweight in Wilson Reis. "Pitbull" dominated most of the fight. Reis, a top level grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had trouble getting Freire to the ground, and eventually wore down on the feet as "Pitbull" scored the finish at 3:29 of the final round.

Freire (16-1) advances to Bellator Season 4 featherweight final where he'll face Daniel Straus. That won't be an easy fight. Straus is a monster at 145 pounds and very good grappler. He dominated Kenny Foster, finishing with a third round guillotine choke in the other semifinal on Saturday. The win was particularly impressive for the massive Straus since the fight began with Arizona afternoon temperatures around 99 degrees.

Patricio's older brother Patricky, 25, reached the Bellator Season 4 lightweight final where he'll face Lloyd Woodard.

Joe Warren was successful in a non-title fight, but barely against Marcus Galvao. Warren, a bantamweight by trade, holds the Bellator featherweight title as well. By the looks of Straus and the Patricio "Pitbull," he'll be hard pressed to exit 2011 with that Bellator 145-pound strap. Warren and "Pitbull" met in the Season 3 final, where the American posted an amazing comeback victory after getting torn up in the first round. It looks like "Pitbull" has shored up any weakness that he had with his takedown defense.

The "Pitbulls" are on the verge of stardom. The MMA blogger for the Daily Mirror in the U.K. says they have a chance to be the next Nogueira brothers.

Strikeforce "Diaz vs. Daley" peaks with 806,000 viewers on Showtime

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Strikeforce_Diaz_vs_Daley_poster_180_10.jpg
Nick Diaz continues to be one of Strikeforce's biggest draws, as last Saturday's "Diaz vs. Daley" event brought an average of 528,000 viewers to Showtime, making it the fourth most-watched Strikeforce event on the network.

The numbers were reported on Tuesday by MMAJunkie.com, who also stated that peak viewership came in at 806,000 viewers for the night's headlining fight between Diaz and Paul Daley.

The fantastic main event fight saw Diaz defeat Daley by TKO in one of the wildest and most exciting one round fights in memory, as well as Gilbert Melendez's return to action with a first round demolishing of Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Ratings for the event rank just below Diaz's last outing, his January 2011 win over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, which brought an average of 561,000 viewers to Showtime. However, that event was boosted by Herschel Walker's participation on the card.

In all, this was the third Strikeforce event of 2011 to best the viewership of all of 2010's events, and makes three events headlined by Nick Diaz that rank in the top five for Strikeforce.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This was a very enjoyable fight card, with three exciting one round finishes. Diaz brings in viewers for Strikeforce and Showtime, but as I wrote yesterday he's cleared out all but one challenger in Strikeforce - Tyron Woodley - and there are more intriguing fights for him now in the UFC. Still, this is a good number for this show after a downturn for March's event in Columbus.
